SkyDemon

SkyDemon Plan GPS Navigation Features

If your PC is portable and has GPS functionality, you can take SkyDemon aloft with you with powerful in-flight navigation features. There are many tablet PCs and netbooks out there suitable for this purpose, and adding SkyDemon to them results in rich functionality on a large screen comparable to the top-end dedicated aviation GPS systems.

Moving Map

The SkyDemon charts are some of the clearest you will find, dynamically adapting themselves to your current flight profile and automatically hiding features that are not relevant to your flight.

SkyDemon In-Flight Map

A report of your current position, in plain English, is constantly updated at the top of the screen along with your next waypoint.

When in flight, an aircraft symbol and trajectory lines are drawn on the map. The colours and size of this symbol can be specified. The map can be configured in a north-up or heading-up orientation, and dynamically moves so that most of the map is dedicated to the route ahead, rather than the aircraft symbol being fixed in the middle.

The progress through your planned route is shown on flight instruments that are constantly updated. These are your distance to next waypoint, distance to end, ETA at next waypoint and ETA at end. ETA can be switched to ETE (estimated time en-route) if preferred.

Groundspeed, altitude and track are also displayed on instruments at the sides of the main map. The track indicator sports a "bug" that always tells you the course to fly to reach your next waypoint.

Warnings

The virtual radar technology pioneered in SkyDemon constantly monitors the route ahead, and many safety features are based on the information it returns. Warnings for approaching airspace, obstructions and terrain are shown.

An Airspace Warning

When you are headed for a piece of controlled or dangerous airspace, whether laterally or vertically, a warning is displayed and an alert sounded. This colour-coded warning instantly alerts you to the presence of the airspace, what the airspace is called and where possible gives you a station and frequency to call to get clearance or information.

Part of the data forming our detailed charts is full information on the location, altitude and height of fixed ground-based obstructions. These are always displayed in the virtual radar instrument. When it is detected that your trajectory, both lateral and vertical, would take you close to an obstruction, a warning is displayed and an alert sounded. The warning shows the type of obstruction and an advisory altitude.

Although not designed to be used for IFR flight, SkyDemon includes terrain elevation information and spot elevations in its data. The elevation of the terrain ahead is always displayed in the virtual radar instrument and when your trajectory would take you close to terrain, a warning is displayed with appropriate advisory action.

For more information on SkyDemon in-flight safety features, which are shared across both SkyDemon products, see the SkyDemon Mobile pages.

GPS Simulation

A simulation mode is available so you can test the in-flight navigation capabilities of SkyDemon, whether you have no GPS hardware or you just want to evaluate this mode of operation.

Simulation mode behaves just as if the software were actually running in-flight. The trajectory of the aircraft is controllable with the keyboard.
