SkyDemon Mobile Safety Features
As you fly, SkyDemon constantly monitors your trajectory, sending virtual radar pings into its chart data to scan for approaching features
that could pose a hazard to flight.
Airspace Penetration Warnings
When your trajectory, both lateral and vertical, would take you into controlled or dangerous airspace, a warning is displayed and an alert
sounded. This colour-coded warning instantly alerts you to the presence of the airspace, what the airspace is called and gives you a station
and frequency to call to get clearance or information.
Red warnings are displayed for danger, restricted or prohibited areas, or for controlled airspace designated class A. Yellow warnings are for
other controlled airspace. Purple warnings are displayed when there is NOTAMed airspace ahead, and other warnings can be turned on for
ATZ, MATZ and Sporting Areas.
Warnings have two large buttons; one displays further information about the airspace (such as its vertical limits and times of activity) and
the other dismisses it. Once dismissed no further warnings about that piece of airspace are shown for five minutes. You can configure which
types of airspace trigger warnings and how many minutes away from the airspace you have to be.
Obstruction Proximity Warnings
Part of the data forming our detailed charts is full information on the location, altitude and height of fixed ground-based obstructions. These
are always displayed in the approaching features instrument. When it is detected that your trajectory, both lateral and vertical, would take you
close to an obstruction, a warning is displayed and an alert sounded. The warning shows the type of obstruction and advisory action.
The horizontal and vertical proximity thresholds for obstruction warnings are configurable in the application options, as is the number of
minutes away the obstruction has to be. As with airspace warnings, an obstruction warning can be dismissed for a period of five minutes, after
which time it will re-appear if the obstruction is still a threat.
Terrain Warnings
Although not designed to be used for IFR flight, SkyDemon includes terrain elevation information and spot elevations in its data. The
elevation of the terrain ahead is always displayed in the approaching features instrument and when your trajectory would take you close to
terrain, a warning is displayed with appropriate advisory action.
The horizontal and vertical proximity thresholds for terrain are configurable in the application options. Terrain warnings are not enabled by
default.
Other Alerts
Various events are displayed onscreen transitively for a few seconds, with their own distinctive sounds, during flight. You will see and hear these
alerts when:
- You Enter Airspace
- You Leave Airspace
- You Reach a Waypoint
- Battery State Changes
These can be very handy for remembering to tell ATC that you have entered or left a zone, or are turning for your next waypoint.
