SkyDemon Mobile Documentation: Briefing Facilities

Back to Table of Contents

If your device has internet connectivity built in, SkyDemon can obtain briefing information for your flight at any time. This can often even be done while in flight. Alternatively, if you are using SkyDemon Plan, all current NOTAM are automatically copied to your device when you sync before flight so your device does not need its own internet connection.

NOTAM

Under the Briefing menu, select NOTAM. The NOTAM Briefing window gives you a narrow route briefing of all NOTAM near your planned route. This assumes that you have synced your device with SkyDemon Plan, so that the latest NOTAM data is present on your device. To filter which NOTAM are shown, switch to the Filters tab where you can enter the dates and times that you are interested in.

TIP: If your device has its own internet connectivity you can download live NOTAM data straight from the SkyDemon server, assuming your subscription is current. Switch to the FIR tab to check the FIR you are interested in (this will have been automatically populated based on your route) then press the Brief button to obtain the briefing.

The briefing displays a NOTAM on each row, and you can select one to read its full text. Note that since this is a narrow route briefing, the list will be empty if you have no route planned.

Regardless of whether NOTAM are displayed in the list, they are plotted on the map and also shown in the virtual radar instrument, just like any other piece of airspace. This means that, like other airspace, warnings are shown when a NOTAM is ahead of you. This makes it very difficult for you to remain unaware of a piece of NOTAMed airspace. Note that some large NOTAM will not be drawn on the map due to space constraints; the definitive place to get a briefing on all relevant bulletins is the NOTAM Briefing window.

TAF and METAR

Under the Briefing menu, select TAF and METAR. You will see a list of airfields; this list of airfields is comprised of all the airfields along your route if you have one plotted, or all airfields nearby if you do not. You can add an airfield to this list by pressing the plus button and using the now-familiar waypoint finder. You can remove an airfield from the list by selecting it and pressing the minus button.

When you are happy with the list of airfields, press the Brief button. After the data is downloaded you will see in the list whether a TAF or METAR was found for each of the airfields you have specified. Select an airfield and the TAF and METAR, if found, will be displayed in the box below.

Weather data is not plotted on the SkyDemon moving map.
