I am trying to install the software on this device. I used the cable to install directly as recommended and it worked ok with the 'start skydemon once installed button' checked. The problem is getting it to start on subsequent boots.

I had this same GPS working with PocketFMS and there was a workaround someone devised here: http://www.pocketfms.com/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=28&t=5512 However, it doesn't seems to work for Skydemon this way. I expect there is some other easy workaround, but would appreciate any help anyone might have finding it!

Thanks

BVM

I don't see a workaround for a problem mentioned on that page. I'd like to help but reading the steps given for PocketFMS didn't give me any clue what might prevent SkyDemon running. If PocketFMS will run on a device and SkyDemon won't, it's usually because .net isn't installed properly. Occasionally we see a device where .net needs to be installed every time, if the unit has been rebooted, since it discards the files.

Ok, but I presume the file needs to be altered in the same way to make it run windows CE upon selecting game. Or should skdemon appear on a screen menu?

Oh I see, you're referring to how to actually start the software. Yes I presume you'd need to alter the file in the same way, specifying the path to SkyDemon.exe as the "game" that can be run on the device. If you installed via the SkyDemon Mobile installer over ActiveSync, this will be either:

/SDMMC/SkyDemon/SkyDemon.Exe

or

/Storage Card/SkyDemon/SkyDemon.Exe

At least, probably.

For PocketFMS the file is altered to read: autorunce.exe, then somehow it runs the pocketfms.exe or whatever. But I tried just changing the file to read sdmmc/skydemon.exe but nothing. Do I need a string that includes both autorunce & skydemon?

I don't know. Nobody here has any specific knowledge of that device.

Gentlemen, not sure if you meant to write things this way:

/SDMMC/SkyDemon/SkyDemon.Exe or /Storage Card/SkyDemon/SkyDemon.Exe

but they should be backslashes \ (not forward slashes /)

eg. \SDMMC\SkyDemon\SkyDemon.exe

Just my 2 cents worth.

Regards,

Max.

Thanks, Max. Bizarrely, my back slash key doesn't work, so I have to paste on when I need one! Not sure why Tim used forward slashes, but for me it was just easier! I did use back slashes on the actual device tho'.

OK flyers. This GPS works by doing something similar to what was gleaned from the PocketFMS site.
First insert your formatted blank data card in the GPS. Connect your PC to the GPS using the data cable & Activesync and use the 'Install Skydemon Inflight' utility on the Programs menu. Once this utility finishes you will find that if you ticked the box 'start Skydemon after installation' (or words to that effect), Skydemon Inflight will start on your GPS.

However, on subsequent re-boots of the GPS you will find that the prgramme won't run. The GPS boots to a menu which lets you choose various options - navigation/video/mp3/game etc. The game is rubbish, so the trick is to change the right file so that when you click on 'game', instead you get Skydemon.

Using Activesync you need to locate the file Residentflash\Dshell\mshell.ini then transfer a copy to your PC. (You can't edit it while its still on the GPS)
Change the 'game' part of the file to read:
Game = \SDMMC\SkyDemon\SkyDemon.exe
Then transfer the file back to the original location on the GPS.
Then the GPS needs to be fully rebooted. i.e. Use the switch at the back, not the button at the top. This is what gave me trouble, if you just use the button on top, the new file will not be loaded & SkyDemon won't run. Subsequent boots can be from either switch.

Happy flying!

Glad you got it working, and thanks very much for posting your findings.
