I've bought (like some others I believe) a 7" GPS PDA unit (Generic Chinese GPS unit)

SkyDemon Inflight (Demo version) seems to run great, I can set it up and it remembers all of the settings (esp screen rotation, mapping options, larger font, GPS device COM no. etc). I can exit the program and go back in and it still remembers it's settings....

...UNTIL I switch it off. Then it forgets all the settings and the next time you want to use it you have to go back through setting the program up again!

 Why??????

Is it not feasible to save the settings on the SD card so the program can bring up its defaults?

How can I sort this, is there a hack or am I missing something here? (yes I am exitting Inflight properly and not removing the SD card even when powered down properly)

I am hesitant to buy Inflight (I have Plan - its great) until the setting issue is cured because this will be mostly used by my not so tech savvy partner who will not appreciate having to reset all her default settings every time she gets to the field and switches on the device! (I'm not sure she will be happy trying to set the right COM port for the GPS either!)

Please help!  (is there any file on the device I can edit to sort this?)

Over to Tim ?....

Good news and bad news. SkyDemon InFlight saves all its settings to the registry, and back when we designed the software we didn't anticipate that there are actually some devices out there where the manufacturers have made the registry a temporary entity which is wiped when the unit is switched off. The registry should be a desirable place to save settings, so we're not doing anything wrong by relying on it, but clearly this doesn't help you.

We will be changing to settings persistence to being file-based in either the forthcoming version or the one that comes after it. Unfortunately this will mean that everybody else, for whom the registry is working, will lose their settings until they configure them again.

What a nightmare!

Like you say you would have thought the device's registry would be safe enough a place to store settings.

Glad to hear you are changing to file persistance in a forthcoming version, I will definately buy knowing that. That's the only thing that put my partner off the idea of using it.

Otherwise she feels it is far far better than the Garmin 430 she had in the aircraft she used to use. She uses GPS as a backup and another modality to confirm her positioning is as she thinks it is.
