I have just installed the evaluation version on a 7" chinese GPS and would like to share the experience.

First skydemon required the .net 3.5 CF to be loaded, problem 1 no space in /windows directory so had to load CEconsole then Control Panel then System then device memory to adjust the slider to 4MB for storage memory vs programme memory, installed .net putting most of the files onto SD card to max programme memory. Run skydemon, success.

I have subsequently used a script executer used by the mio unlock fraternity to develop a start up script for power down fresh boot including using preferred settings from the registry for skydemon. This required using a registry editor to extract the keys used by both .net framework and skydemon. The regedit was then used in the script on cold start to reintroduce the keys. The next step was to use a small application called SetSystemMemoryDivision.exe to change the storage/programme memory boundary to 4MB , then copy the .net files to /windows (about 5 files the rest remain on the SD card) I do this as a normal cab install would bring up the filemenu to select directory. The script then finishes by running skydemon (in landscape mode with com port all setup and ready (com2 4800)). This startup takes about 3-5 seconds.

The script programme can then be setup to run on the native GPS use interface by selecting settings and changing the GPS path to the startup script. Easy to change back to igo8 for car nav. Alternatively you can set the ceconsole running and execute whatever programme from the desktop

If anyone wants the script I can send.

Hi,

I am by no means an expert on GPS devices however I'd like to throw in my two-penneth worth with regards to the above stated ebay GPS running without a problem except losing settings on hard reset.  I'm assuming the Compact Framework 3.5 isn't needed on that device, as your claim suggests everything was hassle free except the retention of settings.

I have a cheap (50 quid ebuyer) F&H 4.3" satnav running Memory-Map with CAA charts merged together however I do like the look of the glass cockpit style interface on SkyDemon.  I haven't yet tried the demo version on my device so can't comment on whether it works or not.  I have tried Plan on the PC though, and think it's excellent.

Here comes the relevant part.  When I set up my satnav to run Memory-Map I had a similar problem on my device.  The GPS COM settings and licence information were lost on restart, as were every other setting on the device except the volume controls and brightness settings on the factory dashboard.  This meant I had to re-register and re-configure the GPS device for Memory-Map via USB connection to the registered software on the laptop every time I used the GPS.  This is obviously not good enough as I like to switch off the GPS in flight to keep my navigation skills up to scratch and conserve battery.  It's just there as a failsafe, really.

I'm not a computer expert, so I don't know if this will work for all devices or all pieces of software, but I noticed that although all settings were lost on hard reset, anything I changed in the registry was retained.  (Using CERegEdit, that might be worth looking into).  I then changed the registry entries that referred to the 'Application Data' folder's physical location from the device's root folder to the root of the SD card.  Then, the next time I registered Memory-Map it worked perfectly and has done since.

Tim, congratulations on such great software.  You're (obviously) much more knowledgeable than me with the mechanics of CE software so maybe you can comment on why the above worked for me/if it will work with your software on this device.  I'm thinking that the authors of Memory-Map chose to store licence information in that particular location and the fact that I changed the location of the folder to an editable memory made it work so I was just lucky... I did, however, notice that it's possible to change the location of other folders, such as Program Files, My Documents etc.  so, if InFlight stores settings in any of those locations, surely it will work upon editing the relevant registry entry?

Apologies for being all mouth and no action on this one, I've got my device running Memory-Map at the moment as I said and I've not plucked up the courage to start messing again... However when I do have a spare 50 quid from a rainy flying weekend I intend to try and make the switch to InFlight or even the 7 inch device.

Thanks for listening.  Rodge.

Hi again.

On a further note, the screenshot posted above also looks like the fonts/colours of ATZs and labels etc. are missing.  Could this be due to the framework/lack of it?  I've also read that it's possible to re-flash those devices with whatever you want, however it is risky and I have no idea of how to go about it.  Maybe that would be a more robust way of setting up the system.

Cheers.

SkyDemon InFlight currently stores its settings in the registry. Some devices don't save the registry. Yours apparently must do since it has remembered your redirection of the Application Data folder.

The screenshot posted above in this thread looks like normal rendering (albeit without GDI+) to me.

Thanks for your positive feedback!

Hi All,

It would be good to know exactly how people have managed to get Skydemon working on this particular 7inch GPS.

I have exactly the same unit and have tried again but still with no success I wonder if some units are being shipped with different software builds I think my problem is Net framework is missing. Have tried installation through active sync but it will not install.

If anyone is Local to Shoreham it would be good to meet and compare Units software build or even I will fly to meet someone I am that keen to get Skydemon working Crazy

Tim have you ever considered arranging a Flyin for people to meet face to face and try and resolve some of the setup issues

That's a good idea, we'll have to think about that. In the meantime people can always meet us and other customers at Aero Expo in June at the SkyDemon stand.

Does anyone have Sky Demon running on the Memory Map Adventurer Pilot 7000?  The base unit is sold as a Snooper 7000 Truck/motorhome GPS at about £320 so a bit more expensive than the ebay unbranded but less than MM and with Sky Demon it would be far better!.

As per Sky Demon running on the Memory Map Adventurer Pilot 7000.

This is a great idea to be able to use Skydemon on this unit.

The problem so far is getting the 7000 to boot into winCe.
I have had no luck with this.

I have tried getting into wince by putting CECMD.exe on a SD card
to force it into wince but that hasn't worked.

I will keep you posted if I can get it launch into Wince. At that point Skydemon should be easy to load.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Hi All,

Been reading the threads on the 7"GPS with interest, I found this on eBay. A little bit more than a GPS and it seems better all round.

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=200483884074&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT

Any Thoughts on this one.

Regards Martin
