Hi,I am by no means an expert on GPS devices however I'd like to throw in my two-penneth worth with regards to the above stated ebay GPS running without a problem except losing settings on hard reset. I'm assuming the Compact Framework 3.5 isn't needed on that device, as your claim suggests everything was hassle free except the retention of settings.
I have a cheap (50 quid ebuyer) F&H 4.3" satnav running Memory-Map with CAA charts merged together however I do like the look of the glass cockpit style interface on SkyDemon. I haven't yet tried the demo version on my device so can't comment on whether it works or not. I have tried Plan on the PC though, and think it's excellent.
Here comes the relevant part. When I set up my satnav to run Memory-Map I had a similar problem on my device. The GPS COM settings and licence information were lost on restart, as were every other setting on the device except the volume controls and brightness settings on the factory dashboard. This meant I had to re-register and re-configure the GPS device for Memory-Map via USB connection to the registered software on the laptop every time I used the GPS. This is obviously not good enough as I like to switch off the GPS in flight to keep my navigation skills up to scratch and conserve battery. It's just there as a failsafe, really.
I'm not a computer expert, so I don't know if this will work for all devices or all pieces of software, but I noticed that although all settings were lost on hard reset, anything I changed in the registry was retained. (Using CERegEdit, that might be worth looking into). I then changed the registry entries that referred to the 'Application Data' folder's physical location from the device's root folder to the root of the SD card. Then, the next time I registered Memory-Map it worked perfectly and has done since.
Tim, congratulations on such great software. You're (obviously) much more knowledgeable than me with the mechanics of CE software so maybe you can comment on why the above worked for me/if it will work with your software on this device. I'm thinking that the authors of Memory-Map chose to store licence information in that particular location and the fact that I changed the location of the folder to an editable memory made it work so I was just lucky... I did, however, notice that it's possible to change the location of other folders, such as Program Files, My Documents etc. so, if InFlight stores settings in any of those locations, surely it will work upon editing the relevant registry entry?
Apologies for being all mouth and no action on this one, I've got my device running Memory-Map at the moment as I said and I've not plucked up the courage to start messing again... However when I do have a spare 50 quid from a rainy flying weekend I intend to try and make the switch to InFlight or even the 7 inch device.
Thanks for listening. Rodge.
