I'm still finding my way around SD, so please excuse if this is bleedin' obvious.

Let's say I'm planning a flight from Carlisle to Bagby (as it happens, I am). There are two entirely feasible routes, one of which goes over high ground and might not be possible due to low cloud and the other via the Hexham gap, which is longer but can be done in poorer WX.

I can't seem to find a way to load BOTH routes into my 296 GPS. There seems to be no way to give the two routes different names and so any change I make simply overwrites the original route. I've fixed the problem for the time being by starting the alternative route from a different airfield and then routing it via Carlisle but that is a bit of a kludge - there has to be a better way!

Grateful for any pointers as to what I am doing wrong.

John.

I've just made exactly the same point on the post I made in parallel with yours.

Tried to load my Garmin up with a selection of destinations, and different routes for each, and same problem.
Simple fix would be to allow you to enter a name at xfer time, or to append a number to the end of the name - i.e. _1, _2 as there are still a good few characters available.

Personally I prefer to have human names rather than ICAO, as I recognise them quicker when scrolling through, and can name them more obviously. So would prefer option to give a custom name to the route.

Well I'm glad to see it's not just me but I'm wondering whether there will be any response from the SD team. This ought to be a really simple thing to fix!

From a slightly different perspective - but similar underlying issue I use EasyGPS (http://www.easygps.com/) as an intermediate step to get the route on to a GPS map60 which I use as a backup GPS whilst flying (windows CE does crash rather a lot). Save route as a GPX in SD then open file in EasyGPS and the name etc can be edited, re-save and load in to Garmin. Hopefully one day will be able to do all of that (including to non aircraft Garmin) from SD directly.

We'll add a route name prompt to the Garmin route export process if enough people ask for it. Currently, there is no UI for this feature making it very simple, which is a good thing. We're seeing a few people express a desire to be able to customise the route naming and I think we'll probably end up adding a prompt if a clear pattern emerges. This kind of feedback is exactly what this forum is for Smile

I've been doing the same as Rowan to get a route name into Garmin. If the prompt can be incorporated then please ignore my other post regarding the 'gpx out with no names' as I wouldn't need to use the that method.

Thanks for the response Tim. I'd go so far as to say that being able to name exported routes is pretty well essential. SD can always propose a name that'll be used by default but which can be edited/typed over.

Pretty well every route that I actually need to plan (as opposed to just bimbling) ends up having an alternative route as well. Something to do with being surrounded by 3000ft mountains methinks. I'm planning Carlisle to Eddsfield for tomorrow and the most direct route needs me to be able to get up to at least 4000ft, preferably to FL55 to cross the Pennines. What's the betting the cloud base will preclude that in my day VFR only steed?

I can confirm that we've added a route name prompt to Garmin route export ready for the next version.
