Hi - I have just discovered your software and think it has great potential for me. I have a Garmin 196 that at present I use with Easy GPS to manage waypoints, but that's about all it can do. Easy GPS is by no means a Flight planner. However, in using SkyDemon I have found I can't get it to communicate with my Garmin to export the routes and points I create in the programme as I get a Device Not Found on Universal serial Buss message. This is odd because the self same Garmin 196 communicates quite happily with Easy GPS using a USB to Serial converter and when set through the Prolific (the manufacturer of the USB to Serial converter) driver to COM 3.

Thinking Sky Demon might use another COM Port (I can't find out which it uses) I have tried several alternatives, but still get the Device Not Found message when I select 'Export to Garmin' in the Route Menu.

If I can't get the routes to output to my GPS then I'm afraid there will be no point using Sky demon and that will be a real shame. Can anybody help with settings to get it to talk to my Garmin 196. Clearly my COM ports and cables work as I get good connectivity to Easy GPS so it must be something in the Sky Demon set up.

Hopefully someone knows how to fix this.

Thanks

T-Bag

At the moment we only support Garmin devices connected via true USB; i.e. not a simulated COM port. If you'd like to contact us via the link at the bottom of the homepage, we'll see if we can produce a build that'll export via a COM port. No promises though.

You can export to the 196 via serial as I have exported the routes to mine and then to pulled them into Memory Maps from my Garmin (I haven't found a way to export routes from Skydemon to Memory maps yet, but thats another issue)

My cable for the 196 has a USB to Serial convertor, probably the same one you are using as it was supplied by Garmin.

When you plug the Garmin into your USB port, check to see which Com port it has been assigned to in Windows. I find this easiest by right clicking My Computer, select Hardware, then Device Manager, then Ports and you will see Prolific USB-to Seial Comm Port with the comm port shown in brackets eg (COM5).

Once you know what COM port it is on, go into SkyDemon, select preferences, then the Misc tab and set the External Device Port to the COM port that was identified above. It will then work.

Note that I have found I that if you plug the Garmin into another USB port it can be assinged to another com port which will mean you have to look again to see which port has been assigned. So suggest you always plug into same USB port to save messing about.

Also if you are using another application at the same time as SkyDemon they both can't communicate with the Garmin at the same time.

I export to my 196 from SkyDemon by

1) exporting the route as a .gpx file (this is one of the options on the export tab)

2) Opening the .gpx file using EasyGPS and load onto the 196 from EasyGPS.

It's a little bit of a pain to have to make the extra step, but on the other hand it only takes an additional 30 seconds to do, so is a fairly minor issue.

Hope this helps T-Bag.

Thanks very much.  I have just bought Skydemon and want to use it with my trusty 196 - this worked perfectly, it seems!
