feedback - latest w/e trip

Thought users might be interested in my experience of SkyDemon during a trip this w/e.

Left Husthwaite (NY) Sat am, flew to Cromer (landed) flew onto Beccles (stayed over). Departed Cromer Sunday & flew to Weybourne (landed) took Off & went to N Coates and finally returned home around 5pm Sunday.

Comments areas follows. As previously, the features re vert nav, NOTAM warningss and clarity of maps are v good. Best in Class. BUT.....

The programme's auto-sensing of where you are on a route really does not work in a way that I find acceptable. I plumbed in a route that covered the whole trip. But when I started up at Beccles it informed my I was 140NM "off track". It therefore assumed I should have been back at my home airfield. No such problems with my G296 which made the correct assumption re where I was and what wd happen next. I should say it is indeed possible to "fool" the 296. If you have aroute that leaves and returns to home airfield with pretty similar legs and you start off on the reciprocal of your intended final leg, the 296 will automatically invert the whole plan! Does not happen often and I now know what to do about it.
This also mean that if ATC ask you to give estimate at next waypoint, you can't. Hopeless.
But SD's internal logic is simply not good enough for what I imagine is a pretty common usage. If you are just bimbling about you are not going to set up a route and plug into GPS.
The default offtrack alert is too senistive .. being told I am 0.2NM off track is a pain.
Redrawing Map warning is simply annoying .. cannot see why I need to be told at all .. just get on and redraw asap.
Actual Time .. not sure waht can be done about this one. The clock on my GPS (Navigon 8410) did not show the correct time in SD. If I loaded the normal Navigon program, then clock was correct (local time of course). And it was not just 1hr adrift to mean Zulu time. It was hours out.
As anothe 8410user has pointed out, sometimes it stops logging the track and re-fixes staellites. Works 100% in PFMS and in native Navigon. Feels like a snsitivity problem. I certainly do not want to have an external antenna .. 8410 can get a fix indoors and so shd not drop the signal outside.

OVERALL

No way cd I use this unit as primary GPS even tho there is lots to like. Route logic is NBG. Drops signal too often. Some defaults need sorting but I know I can override.

FINALLY

How do I tell the unit I have a full license. Mobile Device Ctre does not work with 8410. Where do I put the license file? This also drove me nuts on 2 hr flight.

SD card sync .. roll on this feature.

Of corse I write this not on the spirit ov overt criticism but in order to amke something that has huge potential to be basically usable in a real trip.

Red Arrows transits

After the incursion by numerous gliders into a Red Arrows display area, I have been looking at how Sky Demon displays them, and also transits.
If you click on the notam in plan , then the route is shown as a red line. What would happen in flight? Would you get a warning?

Have added a farm strip via Create own data. Visible in SD desktop

Created a route with new farm strip as destination

Synced via card

New route is there but destiantion ends "nowhere". i.e. . name I gave it is not there and none of the data (runway, height, runway direction, runway length etc) is there.

What have I done wrong?

GPX waypoint import - comment field

I'm very happy with the new import function. Have waited for the possibility to have non Icao airfields from my country on the system.

I had a comma separated list with:

name,desc,latitude,longitude

I used http://www.gpsvisualizer.com/convert_input to convert it into a GPX file and then imported it to the system.

One wish:

In the desc field I have runway information etc. for the airfield. Is it possible to introduce a comment field on the waypoint menu to allow these info to be displayed when clicking the waypoints?

Coordinates on plog

It is my habit to print a plog, take it to the aircraft and enter the route into the Garmin. Not an unusual way of operating.

This does not work with Skydemon since no lat/longs are shown on the plog except for user points.

Obviously VORs etc are ok since they are normally in the GPS database. The problem occurs with visual points, cities etc

Humbly suggest another tickbox in the print route dialogue "Always show lat/long" or maybe an option with "show RNAV"

Import of GPX

Hi all
I flew the other day with a GPS logger which has produced a GPX file of the flight.
What I would like to do is import this into Plan to view it.
I have tried Route/Import/From file and Tools/Open Flight Log and Tools/import from Garmin device with a GPS connected but with no success. I also tried putting the GPX file into the Logs folder and renaming it with a .flightlog extension. Still no luck!
Any ideas?

Using The Archos 9

Hi,

I thought the following musings may be helpful

I recently purchased an Archos 9 Tablet PC, I chose this device over an Ipad (I am a converted Apple affectionado) specifically so that I could run Skydemon, because so far I have been really impressed with the functionality of this software.

The specific set-up is that I have upgraded to Archos to W7 Home Premium, with some performance tweaks, and a miniature USB memory stick with at least 4gB setup for readyboost to further enhance the speed and performance. GPS functionality is provided by a bluetooth GPS module. The software version at the time was 1.3.1

My first thought was to mount the tablet above the instrument panel, but in my TB10 there was nowhere that didnt obscure at least some part of the instrument panel and/or the radio stack. In the end I lay the Archos on my lap, which actually worked very well.

As a navigation device it works very well, the warnings I felt were useful, and I believe will go a long way to prevent airspace infringements. The altitude readings, whilst I was wary of relying on them actually cross checked with the altimeter to within 10 feet.

Having the large screen made navigation a doddle, and the only criticism would be to the sunlight readability, but that is a function of the Archos, not the software, and by using the tablet on my lap, it was quite easy to either shield the screen with my free hand, or tilt/lift the screen.

Overall impressions were very favourable, and having just downloaded the 1.4 beta, it looks even better with the changes to the display, cant wait to try that out now.

One suggestion, I dont know how feasible it would be, but for a tablet display, it would be quite useful to have some kind of pop-up scratch pad area for noting down clearances etc.

An item with same key has already been added

Hi all

I've been using the original SD on my main pc with no problems.

I downloaded the new version to my 2nd pc and picked up my key from the website. Again, no problems.

I then updated my main pc with the new version and I got this error: "An item with same key has already been added". Planning a route, maps, etc are all possible but I can't get TAFs/METARSs etc.

Reading the web page it appears that I need to use the same key that I downloaded for my 2nd pc, so I copied that one and pasted it into the correct folder on my main pc. No joy.

Can anyone let me know how to lose the error message please?

seeking satellites

I wd like to suggest that if you "stop GPS", then "seeking satellites" warning is hidden. If you are using mobile to plan a route indoors and dont have PC version available, this warning takes up a lot of the screen.

I'm having issues getting my WinCE based device to be seen properly in Windows 7 running in VirtualBox on my MacBook - although it does appear as "Microsoft USB Sync", SkyDemon does not recognise that it is connected. Actually it is an Airspace Aware device, and that software's sync program can't find it either, so it's likely either a Windows 7 problem or a Virtualisation problem.

Anyhow, is it possible to just copy the appropriate files across to the device manually? The routes, user waypoints and notams files are self-explanatory, but I want to make sure that any airspace updates are also copied over and those files are less obvious.

Aircraft Data location

I have reinstalled on a new computer as my old laptop has decided not to boot. On that system I had added aircraft data, but not exported it. I have a backup of the filesystem, but can't find the aircraft data on it anywhere. Is it easily accessible so that I can import it into my new install? (I notice the User waypoints are there in xml format).

Map scale obscured by zoom button

Tiny little glitch this one - when using the desktop version in GPS mode, the large '-' zoom button covers the map scale. This is on a netbook with a 1024x600 display resolution, although I don't believe this is a factor.

OK. Have been having an intensive look at SkyDemon over past week. As some may have gathered, like others, am generally very impressed.

But one area that I think can be significantly improved is the WX functionality. In particular I wd like to make comparisons with PocketFMS whose weather in my view is very good indeed.

Its key features are:

Superimposes international weather symbols onto the chart, wind speed & direction (barbs), cloudbase if 500, 1000 or 2000 feet, metar/taf aerodrome circles and wind can be for 2000', 5000' or 8500'.

You can also add latest satellite picture onto the map .. esp showing rain.

CRUCIALLY you can advance the WX display by 1hr for as many hrs as you need.

The following 2 pics show the area for central England and lets say we want to fly from Yorks to the Norfolk coast. The first pic is for 7:48 UTC and the next is for 11:48.

WE can see that the Norfolk coast cloudbase is around 500' early on and it will be some 3-4hrs before its set to clear. Also you can get a sense of what is happening across the country and how fast/slow any changes are expected to be.

I should say that I have bought the full Skydemon package but intend to keep up PFMS subscription for weather alone. Do not know who they use exactly but I think its some Swiss crowd; I can say the forecasts seem uncannily accurate.

SUGGESTION .. wind symbols in SkyDemon could use the bark system indicating speed .. at first I thought everywhere was blowing 30KT!!

Am showing this in the hope that the excellent development speed at SkyDemon will tackle the WX sometime soon.

TAFs

Bit concerned re TAFs. See attached. The SD info even refers to some TAFs for yesterday. But time of datafeed is right. Also only shows 5 entries and I think full entry is 7.

Looked at other stations too & there were sig diffs.

P3 gives Metoffice raw data for EGNM. Seems same as Aeroweather widget.

Any idea of reason for discrepancy?

Automatic populatation of Winds Aloft

Mag Track

There seems to be no Mag Track printed out on the PLOGs - just True Track and a wind derived Mag Heading. As Mag Track is the primary course information used by all the aircraft nav instruments, may I ask why it has been omitted? The only way at present to derive the Mag Track is to create a PLOG with a zero wind component.

Cannot download logs from Skymap

I have a Skymap IIIC which I connect to my notebook using a serial to USB adaptor (it appears as COM 6). I can download logs using Navbox Proplan 5, but if I try using Skydemon 1.3.2 I get an 'authentication error'. If I try to upload a route, it connects and appears to work, but only about the first half of the route is loaded.

airfield data / locations

I notice a fair bit of "missing data" re airfields .. mostly RT frequencies.

Examples .. Husthwaite freq is 118.60, Eddsfield is 134.00, Bagby (which also has an ICAO code of EGTT .. not shown) is 123.25.

Also the location of Husthwaite is not quite correct. Its my home airfield!

Skydemon LAT/LONG as shown on my Garmin 296 is 54o 09.417' 001o 13.900'

The correct data is 54o 10.131' 001o 13.611'

All in Degrees & Mins decimal

Also the PPR phone number is most useful for microlight sites. Better than the runway info. Often such sites require carefull briefing. Our one has major powerlines at one end of the runway!!

I am sure the users can help with such data. Would you like us to notify you of such things?

TAFs

Hi Tim and everyone,

After playing around with the trial version today I must say that I am very impressed with the features available and only wish that I had come across SkyDemon at an earlier date!

One slight niggle that I came across however was the availability of some of the TAFs. As an example, I was planning a flight from Fairoaks to Lydd and noticed that although the METAR for Lydd loaded and was displayed ok, the TAF was not displayed at the bottom on the TAF tab or ticked in the weather box on the side. I confirmed via AvBrief that a TAF was available for Lydd although it was not displayed at the time (around 1800z). Upon checking again at around 2130z, the TAF was now showing however.

I have noticed that this non-display of TAFs occurs on various aerodromes and not just Lydd as per the example. As I type, the Biggin Hill TAF is not being displayed. Is this a known issue or is there a setting that I have to change somewhere in order to enable the updates.

Could you please advise how the MSA incorporated in the PLOG is arrived at. Can the parameters be changed. The Horizontal and Vertical Warnings dont seem to have any effect and I cant seem to find any reference in the documentation.

Inhibit messages?

Minor point as SkyDemon is very good. Just wondered if there was a way of inhibiting some error messages.

Specifically I quite often get "unrecognised part" messages due to malformed TAFS/METARs. I don't rely on SkyDemon as my primary source of weather though it is a useful check.

Any way of either inhibiting this message, or perhaps an option to make the messages window disappear after a certain number of seconds?

Import route from ICAO flight plan problem

Hi there,

Having just seen this in action at AeroExpo I have downloaded the 30 day eval to do some testing and came across an odd issue.

The first thing I thought I'd do would be to use the route I'd flown today so rather than use the mouse I thought it would be quicker to just use the import route function and that's where I hit a problem

What I wanted to do was to import EGJJ DCT ORIST DCT HAZEL DCT EGTB however when I get as far as EGJJ DCT ORIST I get an error in red saying "Ambiguous waypoint: "ORIST".

Doing a bit of inevestigation by using the route find function and entering ORIST seems to show two ORIST instrument reporting points that appear to be the same (note that I have loaded UK and France charts)

Just reporting .. after installing 1.3.1 the previous shortcuts are invalidated (both on desktop and in the Start menu shortlist).

Was able to start the program using the full (All programs) start menu list.

New demo install today and trying to run first route.

Chart manager has UK and France loaded

Added first route to be from Jersey to Booker (no other points) and got message window with the following errors in red in the messages window:

There is currently no NOTAM data available for the LFRR FIR. Please try again later
There is currently no NOTAM data available for the LFRR FIR. Please try again later
There is currently no NOTAM data available for the EGTT FIR. Please try again later

Any ideas?

Danger / Restricted airspace query

Hi there,

Spending my first evening working with SkyDemon, so hopefully you'll excuse all my questions...

If I look at the danger areas in the english channel such as EGD036 and EGD037 you provide contact information for frequencies and phone numbers

However, if I look at some of the French restricted areas around AVORD such as LFR20B3 you show the verticle limit, identification and activity, however no contact or frequency information. If I look at https://www.sia.aviation-civile.gouv.fr/aip/enligne/PDF_AIPparSSection/AIP%20FRANCE/ENR/5/1007_ENR-5.1.pdf for information on LFR20B3 it also displays frequencies and entry information.

Is this planned to be included at any stage (as it would make French trip planning much much simpler).

I have the Skydemon installed on a Dell XT2 XFR tablet pc.

Last week I was on a tour from Denmark to Germany, Poland, Sweden and back again.

Generally the software is so nice I forget to look at the maps.

I noted the following:

1) In a hotel where there was free wifi the pc connected to the internet. I then started Skydemon, but it crashed with errors several times. I discovered that the free internet required me to open my browser and click yes to the terms. After this all programs had unlimited internet access and the skydemon did not crash again.

2) When flying it is often nice to pan the map to a location further enroute. Is there any possibility to stop or delay the unit to automatically return to the actual position. I found that often when I was studying the airspace ahead the unit returned and I had to pan back again.

3) If you pan to a point and hover with the mouse you will get a box with airspace info. If the map automatically pans back to the aircraft position the box will stay for a while on the same place on the screen hovering over the wrong map area.

4) I still carry Navbox because the database is more detailed. Skydemon is a much better software but I hope the database will grow fast so we can get more countries, and more details. It is nice to click on an airfield and have phone numbers for example.

5) The notam service is very nice but it is not yet implemented for all countries.

6) Suggestion: Internet in the aircraft is not easy, but I often get sms. Would it be possible to setup an extra service where I could plan my route in Skydemon and set the departure time. Your server could then every ½hour send an SMS with the metar/taf enroute.

IFR reporting point difficult to spot

Is there any possibility to adjust the size of the IFR reporting points blue triangels.

They only show at a quite close zoom and they are quite small and often hidden by other things.

I often route via these points and it would be a great help to be able to see them from a more zoomed out position.

Well I have finally taken the plunge and purchased a copy of SkyDemon Plan. I did not buy the complete package as I have no interest in running SkyDemon Mobile and prefer to run the planning software on a tablet PC.

Reading the website I could find no reference to the requirement to also purchase SkyDemon Mobile however on running up the software it appears you also need a SkyDemon Mobile licence to run SkyDemon Plan in Navigation mode ?

Am I missing something here ?

[Minor comment -- it would be nice if messages could be selected/copied, to avoid having to retype them in a case like this.]

I just found another topic which could be related, so posted there too!

Firstly, I would like to thank you for a great job on the software, which was pointed to me by a mutual friend and I am planning on using it once I get back to doing some VFR flying - not seeing where you're flying all the time can get a bit frustrating! :)

I posted in another topic about disused airfields not appearing to show up, which I find odd seeing as we have them on our CAA charts for navigational purposes and they do often provide very good landmarks. Is there a way to turns these on?
I thought at first it may just be the specific one I was looking for missing but then cross-checked with my VFR chart for ones in the Oxford area and can't find the others either.

Also, Just a small point, would it be possible to get other features such as the chalk carvings displayed such as the giant we have done in Cerne Abbas?

I've also noticed, that even when zoomed in, the road and river detailing seems very sparse.
For example, from Sherborne to Dorchester, the A352 is marked however the C12 is not, even though they are worthy of appearing on our half mil VFR charts (which I know are not the same, but surely the detail required there should also be available for this VFR planning software?).

Airfields not displayed

If an airfield's RWY length is not known (e.g. EGMJ - Little Gransden) then the airfield is not displayed unless the "Hide Airfields with runways shorter than:" option is set to zero.

I would prefer that such airfields are always shown regardless of this setting.

Exporting Route from Plan to Inflight

Hi,

My mobile device has SkyDemon installed and working and PC has Plan installed. I can save a route from Plan to the Routes folder under the SkyDemon folder on the Storage Card when I put the SD card in the card reader on the PC.When I put the SD card back in the device I can open the route and it shows up.

With the SD card in device and device connected to PC via USB and ActivSync I cannot export to the device. In Plan under tools/preferences/misc I have typed in the path \Storage Card\SkyDemon\Routes - with and without the prefix MyDevice and have gone through all the port settings one by one - I get the message " cannot find SkyDemon check installed properly" etc etc.

The device is a MyGuide 4200 and SkyDemon Inflight works fine otherwise - help !!

Default directory for routes and waypoints

Whenever I save or load a route, the dialog starts from somewhere in 'Documents'. I would like to keep them with my other data (not on the C: drive) .. is there a way to change the default directory for routes?

Ditto for custom waypoints -- I have a lot to add, by converting from another database, but really do not want those to end up on C: drive (I have to re-install Windows quite often for testing).

Holding duration

The Holding duration for fuel calculation seems to be fixed at 45 minutes; is there a way to change that? I fly from a non-radio airfield, so it is irrelevant (the circuit time is about 5 minutes). I tried setting the fuel burn to zero for Holding, but that wasn't allowed (it bumped to 1).
