Has anyone used or had experiance of this sat nav system (Binatone G500) ?

It has WinCE 5.0 and a big 5 inch display, for only £70 it looks like a bargin, before buying one I would like to know how/if the SkyDemon system will work or not on it.

Any advice or comments very welcome, Steve

I have run it on a Binatone D430. Unfortunately on the latest release, for some reason the map does not show. My only other reservation is the screen brightness. I have not tried it in the air yet.

John, if you contact me directly I can send you a debug build to try and work out why the map isn't showing for you.

I have the G500 from Binatone working (ish), all I needed was a registry editor and then to dump the SkyDemon files on the SD card. However all the settings seem to be lost once the system is shut down, it also won't rotate the display, any suggestions guys ?

PS: microlight fly in at Sywell this weekend, GA-Brooklands fly in next weekend (EGBK)

Damn, sorry...... all the regular settings are saved, if you use the software exit menu rather than power off the unit. However the rotate display still does nothing and I really would like to rotate the display into portrait mode, rather than the default landscape, any help guys ?

If SkyDemon can't rotate the display, it means the device doesn't support display rotation.

I have the Binatone G500 working perfectly well now, it's a very cheap device at £90.00 the only thing it won't do is work in portrait mode, everything else is 100% good.

Does anyone know if there is a way to enable the 'Follow Position' mode from loading the program, it's a pain to have to enable it every time the program is loaded, the same applies for the disclaimer, is there a way to stop that appearing every time you power on the device (last one is the hide menu option). All these little things would be a great help to a very polished package.

Follow mode will become enabled by default in the next version. There's no way to prevent the disclaimer, sorry.

Hi,

My unit - a 4.3" has a main sliding power switch at the back and a "soft" on/off button on the top. If I use the top button to switch off- then on -the unit powers up back to the screen straightaway.

AT3, do you have any more information on how you got your Binatone G500 working ? I have got all the required files onto the sd card and can't work out how to change the registry or what to change when I get there.

To change the registry on the G500 it seems that I need a remote registry editor but the only one I can find is from Microsoft and only runs within Visual Studio or Platform Builder. And once you manage to get inside the G500s registry what changes are required ?

Hi,

I used a registry editor called 'mobile registry editor V1.11' this works over active sync from my desktop PC (found for free download on google).

There is a key  HKLM\init in the registry that has the last entry called launch.exe (or something like that), that is the key that launches the Binatone GPS system, I just simply changed that to skydemon.exe and path to the mini sd card in the binatone system.

Now it launches skydemon on power on, everything works very well, could be faster, but still it does all function (except for the screen rotate), otherwise I'm happy with the system, maybe I'l look for a faster, bigger screen later in the year when some others have proved them first !

If you need any further info please let me know and I'll make a screen dump of the registry from the binatone system.

Hi Steve,

I have been trying all day to try to get the G500 to work with no luck. I think it is because I don't have .net installed on it. Do you know if .net is installed on yours ? I think that there should be keys for .net in the registry under HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft

I have a suspicion that Binatone have changed the installation. I found another post on the web and both you and the other author refer to launch.exe being the last entry in HKLM\init but on my G500 I have Launch50 with value launch.exe followed by Launch60 with value serviceStart.exe

I have been trying to install .NET Compact Framework 2.0 and run into problems here too. I think I need a file called wceload.exe which executes the .cab file containing .net. Do you have one of those ?

Binatone G500 - Version 1.3 of the SkyDemon software.

The display will only work in landscape mode, rotation of the display is not possible.

Step 1. MioPocket needs to be installed to "unlock the system", this needs to be done from a micro SD card (free download from Google).

Step 2. Using ActiveSync, copy the SkyDemon files to the 'residentflash' (the SD card is too slow to initialize and will have intermittent loading issues), you may need to delete the on board road navigation software to make space (save it somewhere in case you want to restore the system to original specification) - the quickest way is to use a Micro SD card to copy/paste files from, the USB lead is very slow.

Step 3. Using a 'mobile registry editor' (free download from Google), change the HKLM/init key (item 9999) from the MioPocket launch path to the path for your installation of SkyDemon (\residentflash\SkyDemon\SkyDemon.exe) and remove the original navigation system launch entry (item99 - \launch.exe) - save the registry before making any changes (or at least take a screen capture for future reference).

Step 4. copy the license file over to the device (unless it's in 30 day trial mode), reboot, using the power button (don't use the small hole on the side for a 'hard reset' as that will reset the registry to factory settings !).

Step 5. SkyDemon should now be running, sync with activesync for all logs/maps/routes etc.

Some information.....
Screen size = 5 inch (not great in bright sunlight, but hey it's a very cheap system)
Battery Life = approx 3 hours (North up mode, no terrain shading)
Time to obtain satellite fix = approx 5 minutes (if you are not moving it's quicker, it's always ready by the time the pre-flight checks are done)
The sounds all work if you use the control panel link to change the volume to full
Syncs with desktop PC using activesync and the supplied USB cable
Cost = approx £90 - £100 online, delivered
Comes with a 12VDC charger (cigarette lighter socket connector) and windscreen suction mount which seems to stay put well - does anyone know where I can get a power connector for the strange power socket used in the Cessna 172SP so I can charge the system in flight ??

If anyone needs any help setting up one of these units I would be happy to support, I would happily do the setup for you - for a small fee ;-)

Hi Guys,

I am using a gliding software on a B350. The executable runs from (MicroSD card) MobileNavigator/MobileNavigator.exe. I have found a G430 which is very similar to G500 mentioned here. My software in the SDcard  is ignored when I start the satnav. It might be because of a new path name for the executable in the SDcard? Can anyone using G500 let me know what is the directory name and the executable name for programs running from SDCard?

Cheers,

Haluk
